1 Tategasaki Sightseeing Tour [Kumano City]

ガマの口2

After departing from Onigajo (Demon’s Castle), while enjoying the rough and varied coastline together with the sea breeze, we will make a stop at a rocky cave called Gama no Kuchi (toad’s mouth).
This place is where you can find a beautiful sight that is acclaimed as the “Blue Grotto” of Kumano.

Continuing on, we will arrive at Tategasaki, where a colossal shield of columnar jointing stands at a height of 80 meters with a row of several hundred columns, undeniably an impressive work of God.
This place is also known as the landing site of Emperor Jimmu’s eastern expedition.

海金剛

After passing Tategasaki, you will encounter the even larger Umi Kongo cliff, towering at 160 meters. The view of the rocky surface up close is truly impressive.

The scenery of the ria coast from the Kumano-nada is a treasure trove of natural beauty, showcasing both its roughness and its sculptural magnificence.
It is one of the many charms of Higashikishu.

2 Set-Net Fishing Experience [Kumano City]

熊野市内の磯崎、遊木、甫母の3か所の漁港では、漁師さんと一緒に定置網漁を体験できます。
At three fishing ports in Kumano City, namely Isozaki, Yuki, and Hobo, you have the opportunity to participate in set-net fishing with local fishermen.
Join the fishermen and board a boat early in the morning, while it’s still dark, and head to the set-net. Reel in the net and scoop up the fish, which may include marlins or sea turtles.
A highlight of this experience is witnessing the sunrise over the horizon while out at sea. By engaging in this activity with active fishermen, you can appreciate not only the allure of fish but also feel the fishermen’s thoughts and feelings toward the sea and fish.
