Route features

Hongudo runs deep through the mountains and is linked to Shiko (Wakayama Prefecture) on the opposite bank via the Sanwa Ohashi Bridge over the Kumano-gawa River.
Although much of the route involves traveling on prefectural roads and forest roads, there are numerous historical sites such as Jizo statues along the way.

Route highlights

Jizo (Stone Signpost) of Okouchi

Jizo (Stone Signpost) of Okouchi

It is enshrined in a shrine constructed out of natural stone.
It serves as a guiding point for both the paths to Hongudo and the Okouchi settlement.
On the right-hand side, there is a sign that reads "Right - Honku Michi," while the left-hand sign says "Left - Okochi."

Shishigaki (Boar walls)

Shishigaki (Boar walls)

As you travel along the route, you will notice a wild boar wall built between the mountains and
farmland.
This wall serves to keep unwanted wildlife out of the fields.
